The new government policy, using Tiongkok instead of China to mention PROC. It makes some people happy, but for me, a Hokkianese Indonesian it created confusion. I was born during Orde Baru era and I was used to with Cina for PROC. Although I didn't like it, but under the tyrannical regime, what could I do?
Then, Orde Reformasi came. PROC mentioned as China, its international name. It caused division among Chinese Indonesian, some accepted, some rejected. The party who rejected China to call PROC, suggested Tiongkok.
At the end, the government of Indonesia made a decision to use Tiongkok. It's so ridiculous for me because the government of China and Taiwan use People Republic of China and Republic of China as their formal names in every international institution. Why Indonesia use Tiongkok which even my Taiwanese and Chinese friends do not understand that it is actually China?
I once asked my mother about Tiongkok, she answered me that a Hokkianese word. Since I was born the Hokkianese words I know are very little such as ngyama, ngyaung, tuaung,cikung, akung, ama, apak, amu,etc. I did not know the word Tiongkok untill I read newspaper few months ago.
I suggest the government to cancel the rule for using Tiongkok. Just use China. It does not offend Chinese.
